Let’s move on and have a quick look at the history of
Mauritius.
French immigrants first came to Mauritius Island in
1715. Prior to that, the Dutch had made a brief
settlement. The French then named Mauritius as Ile De
France. Shortly after they constructed the first road
and harbor. The sugar industry was slowly created by the
French under Governor Mahe de Labourdonnais. Slaves were
brought from Africa and Madagascar to work in the
sugarcane fields. The British captured the island in
1810 and by 1814 were given full rights on Mauritius by
the Treaty of Paris.
Indian immigrants began arriving in Mauritius and the
abolition of slavery followed in 1835. Sugarcane Fields
and industry expanded and it became much more
progressive and important to the economy, despite the
fluttering price of sugar. It still was the main crop
and reforms in the political and economic arena helped
Mauritius progress.
Independence was granted on March 12, 1968 and Sir
Seewoosagar Ramgoolam became the first Prime Minister of
Mauritius being hailed as ‘father of the nation’.
As part of the tropical weather, cyclones are a fact of
life. A 1969 cyclone, Claudette struck and destroyed
significant sugar fields. That followed by a 1980
decline in sugar prices be came the impetus for the
agriculture to diversify, with emphasis put on the
import and export markets.
In 1992 Mauritius became a member of the British
Commonwealth, where it remains today.
The people of Mauritius are multiracial and very
friendly and inviting. Tourism has blossomed and every
